Standley Hunter Rich was born on 26 December 1883 in Paris, Idaho, to Joseph C. and Ann Eliza Hunter Rich. His mother was the daughter of Edward Hunter and Ann Standley and his grandparents on his father's side were Charles C. Rich and Sarah Jane Peck. On 14 January 1914 he married Kathryn Whittle.
